Nanny angst - the worry about leaving your children with someone else — takes many forms, marital demise being just one. Child-rearing these days is a fraught business and this week the Government announced plans to launch a National Academy for Parenting Practitioners to provide advice on what techniques actually work. The announcement goes hand in hand with policies to encourage mothers to leave their small children and return to work, but there is one thing that childcare vouchers cannot mitigate: maternal guilt. A recent survey found that 95 per cent of working mothers with children under the age of three feel guilty about going back to work.
According to the clinical psychologist Oliver James, a third of mothers of small children who work full-time are "social class one" - managerial middle-class powerhouses. Among some nanny circles, "spotting the cam" has even become a competitive sport.
Theater Review: Predictability drags down ‘Nana’s Naughty Knickers’
A couple of recently launched US websites take nanny angst to new levels of absurdity. One hapless New York nanny has been spotted sleeping on a park bench, some distance from her month-old charge. Other naughty nannies have been clocked leaving children unsupervised in busy car parks and ignoring tearful pleas for warm clothes or food. Occasionally, however, a more sinister note emerges: one nanny was spotted compulsively poking holes in a pre-schooler's burger with a toothpick before snatching a chip from the chubby hand and pulverising it on the table with her fist.
Would you want this woman looking after your precious offspring? Such websites may be of little practical use, unless logging on becomes mandatory for all American mothers, but they will certainly fuel a few maternal nightmares.
